Some toys get played with once and then sit in a corner collecting dust. We wanted to make something different.
Our story started in 1988 when a couple of parents—Melissa and Doug, yes, real people with six kids of their own—decided they wanted to create toys that actually meant something. Not plastic stuff that lights up and makes noise for five minutes. Not screens. Real, hands-on play that lets kids build, create, imagine, and figure things out on their own terms.
It began with a simple puzzle inspired by a favorite childhood book. From there, things grew. And grew. Today, we design everything from wooden puzzles and pretend play sets to arts and crafts kits and developmental toys for kids from birth through age six. Our first big hit was wooden puzzles—and honestly, they’re still some of our favorites. There’s something about watching a toddler figure out where that chunky piece goes that never gets old.
What makes us different? We think about how kids actually play. Every product gets designed with purpose—not just to entertain, but to help develop real skills. Fine motor control. Problem solving. Creativity. Confidence. When a kid runs a pretend ice cream shop or builds a castle out of blocks, they’re not just having fun. They’re learning. The play is pretend, but the discoveries are very real.
We’re also big believers in screen-free time. Not because screens are evil, but because there’s something irreplaceable about a child getting lost in open-ended play. The kind where they make the rules, solve the problems, and decide what happens next.
Over the years, we’ve become the #1 preschool brand for wooden and sustainable toys and the #1 brand in children’s puzzles. We’re proud of that. But what matters more is hearing from parents and teachers who tell us our toys are the ones their kids come back to again and again.
We design every toy in our Connecticut studio, and we still make prototypes by hand until we get it just right. The signature on every product is a promise: quality materials, thoughtful details, and toys built to last through years of play.
